About us

The Rotary Club of Palatine is a civic service organization that has been active in the Palatine community for over 50 years. We are organized under Rotary International, which began in 1905 in Chicago. The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Please feel free to join us, or contact us at info@palatinerotary.com.

We meet for fun and fellowship at 7:15 every Tuesday morning at the Red Apple Pancake House & Cafe. It's located at 2121 Plum Grove Rd, Rolling Meadows, IL 60008 (847) 925-8048. Exchange Students

The Rotary Club of Palatine has hosted Exchange students for most of our history. Each exchange student spends approximately 11 months in Palatine, attending High School and living with 2 or 3 host families. The Rotary Student Exchange is different from other student exchange programs in that:

  1.    • The students attend weekly Rotary meetings
  2.    • There is support from the entire Rotary club, from the Rotary District, and from Rotary International
  3.    • The students stay with us for 11 months, not just for the school year

The Club also supports local students interested in living in a foreign country as an outbound exchange student. It can be a very enriching experience for everybody involved. If you are interested in participating, please contact us.

Polio

In 1985 Rotary started its campaign to globally eliminate polio, "PolioPlus". At that time there were approximately 350,000 "wild" cases annually. Last year that number was 22. So far in 2018, there have been 12 cases. Polio is now endemic to only three countries: Afghanistan, Packistan, and Nigeria. Several other organizations have joined this effort, including the World Health Organization, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Because of this:

  •    • 16 million people are walking who would otherwise have been paralyzed
  •    • A polio-free world will save $40 - $50 billion in health costs over the next 20 years
  •    • Polio can follow smallpox as the second human disease eliminated from the world
  •    • More than 2.5 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine
  •    • Rotarians have contributed over $1.7 billion to eliminate polio

Clean Water

Our current project is bringing clean water and WASH stations (water, sanitation, and hygiene) to 16,000 to 18,000 children in 48 schools in Sacatepequez, Guatemala. The total budget is over $500,000, $425,000 of which is coming from the Rotary Foundation. The project is being driven by the Rotary Club of Barrington and Club Rotario Guatemala Sur. Twenty six other clubs are also participating. As a Global Grant, there are strict requirements for sustainability, to ensure that clean water will continue to flow for years and years after completion.

As a result of this project, kids will stay healther, and in particular, girls will be able to attend school without interruption. In addition to infrastructure, education and habit formation are fundamental parts of this project.
